public sector officials The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) has launched the first-ever Sports Strategy Development Executive Programme for public sector officials working in the area of sports strategy and policy. The first course will take place in Switzerland, on May 16-22, 2010. During this unique one week executive programme participants will learn from industry experts about practical strategies and tactics, network with colleagues from around the world, and meet international federations’ leaders during field visits. The programme, designed by CIES in collaboration with TSE Consulting – the international sports management firm, has a goal of inspiring new solutions and encouraging innovative ways of thinking that will help the public sector save time and resources and achieve better results from their sports strategies. The course takes place in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, with field visits to Lausanne, the Olympic Capital, to see the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and various international sports federations, and Zurich, to the headquarters of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Top-level executives and academics from around the world will contribute to the programme. An example of the topics covered during the programme include: evaluating the benefits and costs of sports events, building effective partnerships between international federations and cities, funding models and policies for sports performance, city marketing and place branding through sport, improving health through sport, and the role of urban regeneration. Spaces are limited to 25 participants and enrolment will be taken on a first come, first served basis. Registration is now open online at www.cies.ch. Prof. Denis Oswald, CIES Director and IOC Executive Board Member, said: “The public sector has often been overlooked by the sports world, but yet it continues to grow in influence and importance. A coherent, coordinated public sector sports policy can achieve extraordinary benefits, both economic and social – this is why we believe it is time to provide an opportunity for public sector officials working in this area to learn, share and be inspired. We are proud to be the leaders in offering this innovative new course for the benefit of both the public sector and sport around the world.” CIES is an independent study centre located in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. It was created in 1995 as a joint venture between FIFA, the University of Neuchâtel and the City and State of Neuchâtel. Using a multi-disciplinary approach CIES provides research, top-level education programmes and consulting services to the sports world. Current education programmes include the FIFA Master (International Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport), a Master in Sports Law (MAS), and various executive sports management programmes at Universities around the world through its International University Network.
